After a thrilling 9-0 win over Yeshiva on October 27 that punched their ticket to the Skyline Conference tournament as the top seed, the women's soccer team has advanced to the Skyline Conference championship for the first time in SLC history in any team sport. Prior to this impressive moment, the SLC women's tennis team made similar history just last year when they became the first individual sport in school history to win a Skyline Conference title.
In the semifinal match against Manhattanville College on November 2, senior Lainie Cadieux '23 took the biggest shot of the season, sending a penalty kick into the net to give the Gryphons a thrilling 1-0 win in front of a boisterous home crowd at Fleming Field.
"The fans are the fuel that is powering our engines," said head coach Maurizio Grillo. "We hear and recognize all of their voices on the sidelines, from President Judd to the other coaches in our athletic department who have canceled practices to come support us with their team, the parents who travel hours to watch their daughter play for a few minutes, and, of course, our incredible student body population."
Grillo and the team are hoping for that same crowd energy when they take on #3 Farmingdale State at Fleming Field on November 5 at 3 p.m. The #1 seed Gryphons are looking to become just the fourth school to win a Skyline Conference women's soccer championship since the conference first started in the 2004 season. Former member Stevens Institute won the first three titles, St. Joseph's-Long Island won in 2015, and Farmingdale State has won it from 2007-14 and 2016-21 for a total of 13 conference postseason titles, including the last five.
