Youth Education and Community Engagement
In the spring 2022, the College offered on campus, a free six-part digital media workshop for youth between the ages of 12 and 15 in Westchester county. Dr. Yeong Ran Kim and their students in “Media Lab: Youth Education and Community Engagement” class designed a curriculum on multimedia storytelling. In preparation for the workshop, SLC students were assigned to work on multimedia projects on either the local history of the communities in Yonkers and Broxnville or their relationship with these neighborhoods. Each group came up with projects, combining audio, video, photography, dance, and spoken word, in which they find a new way to share their unique perspectives and stories about their communities.
Dr. Kim and her students organized a series of workshops, utilizing collage, creative writing, video-making, character design, rotoscope, movement composition, and animation. The workshop series helped young people from the adjacent neighborhoods to use their imagination and become artists, thinkers, leaders, and contributing members of their communities. Participants learned skills in digital media production, communication, critical thinking and leadership.
