History faculty member Ryan Purcell is featured in a National Geographic article chronicling the origin of the iconic “I [Heart] NY” logo as an effort to “rebrand the city” in the late 1970s. Purcell, whose interests include U.S. cultural and intellectual history, public history, 20th Century popular music and cinema, and the history of the City of New York, is the creator of the Soundscapes N.Y.C. podcast. As Purcell explains in an interview with “The Metropole”, the podcast “started as an American Studies lecture course [at Sarah Lawrence College] called American Soundscapes.”
