Over the spring semester, the iconic Westlands wisteria arbor underwent a much needed-restoration. The arbor, becoming unstable in its old age and struggling to support the beloved wisteria, was disassembled in January and then rebuilt over the last few months. And just in time for Earth Day, we’ve spotted the first green buds signaling that spring is indeed here!
This project was no simple task however. To start, the college had to raise the funding for the new arbor. Next, expert horticulturist and alumna Ani Adishian ‘95 and her team carefully peeled back the wisteria so that work could begin in taking apart the old arbor.
Then, a team began a months-long construction project to build a new walkway and arbor to support the wisteria. Ani and her team then put the wisteria back in place, just in time for it to follow its annual tradition of blooming for Commencement. It’s particularly fitting that in some cultures, wisteria symbolizes good luck, success, and longevity: all things we wish our graduates as they leave Sarah Lawrence to embark on the next chapter of their lives.
