As part of its THINK TANK series, Sarah Lawrence’s Theatre Program recently welcomed actor Michael Luwoye to campus for a conversation with students. Luwoye, who starred in the title role of Broadway’s Hamilton, sat side by side with students on stage in the Suzanne Werner Wright Theatre, answering questions and engaging in a conversation focused on topics ranging from joy, artistic practice, and Luwoye’s journey from a small town to the big stage. The actor, who has also appeared in television series and feature films, shared his thoughts on the importance of representation on stage and screen, theatre teachers from his childhood that formed who he is today, and choosing artistic projects that matter and align with his values.
Sponsored by the Berelle Katz Samuel Theatre Fund, THINK TANK aims to pair artists and other special guests with students to discuss important topics in the theatre field, from artistic practice and new forms to diversity and equity to consent and social engagement. Previous guests include Intimacy Directors Nicole Callender and Judi Lewis Ockler, indigenous theatre maker Emily Johnson, antiracism facilitator Nicole Brewer, and guests from faculty member David Neumann’s multidisciplinary collective Advanced Beginner Group.
Events in the THINK TANK series are student-run, with students in faculty member Stephen Tyler Davis’ Music and Theatre Practice: Creating Community class providing technical support and taking on roles in audience experience, caring for the guest artist(s), publicity, and registration.
