Sarah Lawrence College is offering a wide range of pre-college summer programs in 2019 that will allow high school students to explore their interests and prepare for college. Course topics include filmmaking, creative writing, social justice, and therapeutic game design.
“Our programs are taught by Sarah Lawrence faculty and distinguished guest faculty, providing an introduction to college-level academics and allowing students to pursue areas of study that they are passionate about,” said Kodiak A. Trauger, Director of Summer and Professional Programs.
Students can live on campus or commute to class for most courses, offering them flexibility and a taste of the college experience. A meal plan is available and students also have use of the college library, pool, and squash courts.
Summer programs are open to rising 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders. Residential students must be age 15 or older at the start of the program and commuter students must be at least 14. To learn about costs, schedules, and housing options, visit sarahlawrence.edu/summer.

Topics covered will include Python, Arduino, circuit design, and the medical context.
Writer’s Week
July 1 – 6, 2019
Directed by distinguished faculty members, Writer’s Week lets high school students explore creative writing in a non-competitive and non-judgmental environment that values the risks and adventure of the creative process. Each day, participants attend fiction, poetry, and theatre workshops led by prose writers, poets, and performance artists. The program also includes faculty and student readings and a celebration of student work on the final day. This is a commuter-only program.
Social Justice Collective
July 14 – August 2, 2019
This program provides students theoretical, historical, and present-day perspectives on social justice issues involving class, gender, sexuality, and race. They will dialogue across difference and explore how these issues affect their communities and the greater world. Students will create films, photographs, writing, performance pieces, and other art in response to these issues. This program will culminate in a gallery exhibition of each student’s work.
Filmmakers Collective
June 30 – August 2, 2019
The focus of this five-week introduction to filmmaking course is on storytelling and developing the skill sets necessary to translate the written page onto the screen. Every student will produce and direct their own four- to six-minute film. In small classes, students will learn everything from operating cameras to setting up lights to capturing sound. No prior filmmaking experience is required.
Writer’s Village: A Creative Writing Intensive
July 14 – August 2, 2019
Students will participate in fiction and poetry workshops led by members and guests of Sarah Lawrence’s celebrated writing faculty. There will be in-class writing exercises and students will have their work considered compassionately and seriously by their peers and professor. Readings, craft talks, field trips, and free writing periods supplement learning in the classroom. The program culminates in a final reading and anthology.
