Exhibition on display at the Esther Raushenbush Library through Friday, December 16th, 2022.
Sarah Lawrence College and the Esther Raushenbush Library are pleased to present their November exhibition titled FINAL DAYS. This solo show features visual artist, activist, author, educator and SLC Alumna, Dr. Hasna Muhammad ‘77. On display are multiple works in a range of media including photography, archival artifacts and a soundtrack with multiple interviews, music, and sound. The exhibit creates a private healing space and a public tribute to the legacies of Muhammad’s parents, Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee, as well as other family members, friends, and loved ones. Dr. Muhammad created photographs of the final days of her cousins, Donald L. Miller and Karen Fletcher; her father-in-law, Pearl Lee Saunders, her father-friend, Dr. Beny Primm; her friend, Sara Myers; and her parents’ friends, Max Roach, Clement Cumberbatch, and Sidney Poitier. Presenting never-seen-before images, FINAL DAYS shares some of the personal, ceremonial, and farewell rituals that they wanted for themselves and that others carried out for them.
The exhibition is curated by Kishauna Soljour, Assistant Professor of Classics & Humanities at San Diego State University.
FINAL DAYS is made possible through the generous support of the Mellon Foundation and the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
