The Child Development Institute facilitates a play program called Community Adventure Play Experience or CAPE. CAPEs provide children the opportunity to create their own play experiences out of recycled materials. Every semester, CDI offers a CAPE series at the Yonkers Riverfront Library which is open to library patrons and the larger community.

As the publishing industry diversifies, writers are becoming more and more thoughtful about writing characters outside of their identities and experiences - a process Nisi Shawl and Cynthia Ward calls “Writing the Other.” Although it is vital to treat marginalized characters with great care, writers often begin the process of “writing the other” with false assumption that our identities - and, as a result, our power within institutions - remain unchanged over time. But what happens when we acquire or discover identities we never knew we possessed after creating characters we mistakenly othered? If shaping stories shapes who we are, how do we contend with the fact that the very process of writing may drastically shift how we identify? Why are we attracted to writing about “the other” instead of writing about ourselves? In this talk, Dr. Mathangi Subramanian will trouble the idea of a fixed other while offering strategies for working with diverse characters in ways that acknowledge the dynamic nature of identity.

Dr. Mathangi Subramanian is a neurodiverse South Asian American writer and educator. Her novel A People's History of Heaven was longlisted for the PEN/Faulkner and the Center For Fiction First Book Award, and was a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award. Her middle grade novel Dear Mrs. Naidu won the South Asia Book Award, and her picture book A Butterfly Smile was inducted into the Nobel Museum by economics laureate Dr. Esther Duflo. A faculty member at the Regis Mile High MFA program and guest artist at Denver School of the Arts, she holds a doctorate in education from Columbia University Teachers College.

CDI is proud to be a collaborator on the DEY Professional Learning Institute (PLI) inaugural book study on Segregation by Experience: Agency, Racism, and Learning in the Early Grades by Jennifer Keys Adair and Kiyomi Sanchez-Suzuki Colegrove. Early childhood educators and advocates are invited to join CDI for a four-week six-hour course to discuss this powerful study and the need to center children's agency in the pursuit of racial and social justice. Participants are asked to purchase their own book and commit to all four sessions in the series.

Join Filmmaking and Moving Image Arts student Rohan Padmakumar '24 for a special Halloween weekend screening of Nope (2022) directed and produced by alum Jordan Peele ’01. Following Peele's Get Out and Us, Nope tells the story of a man and his sister who discover something sinister in the skies above their California horse ranch, while the owner of a nearby theme park tries to profit from the mysterious, otherworldly phenomenon. Rohan will introduce the film and share how Peele's work has inspired his own filmmaking.

Join us for a welcome by President Judd followed by a Q&A with Provost and Dean of Faculty Kanwal Singh and Vice President and Dean of Students Dave Stanfield.

Join our panel and gain insight into Sarah Lawrence's emerging community leaders in Career Services, Community Partnerships, SLC EmbeddEd, and SLICE (Sarah Lawrence Interdisciplinary Collaborative on the Environment). Students will share their experiences and the life skills they've gained through interdisciplinary courses, internships, volunteer work, and employment.

Join us for a terrifying tour of Raushenbush Castle (aka The Library) as we celebrate Scary Book Month. 10 minute tours will include an overview of library spaces, services, and a team of 12 skeletons! Each skeleton will be displaying a spine-tingling book from our collection, chosen by library staff. We’ll also be running our 3D printer in our mini-makerspace. Every participant gets a 3D printed SLC keychain. Come enjoy our haunted stacks and stairwells as we celebrate the Halloween season! Tours run every 15 minutes until 1:30 p.m.

Join Director Paige Ackerson-Kiely and Assistant Director Maddie Mori for a virtual info session and Q&A on the Sarah Lawrence College MFA Writing program structure, application process, and overview of events and student life. Afterward, we welcome prospective students to a one-hour sample class in the genre of their choice with graduate faculty members
