This month the Library is excited to recognize Roy Ben Shai and the recent publication of his book, Critique of Critique. Please join for coffee, cookies and conversation with Roy and the host, Tim Kail.

Amidst widespread DEI efforts and initiatives, in this presentation, Dr. Mariana Souto-Manning will problematize the terms and conceptualizations of “diversity” and “inclusion.” In doing so, she will offer ways to move toward a new and expansive politics of belonging. This new politics of belonging critically rethinks, in classrooms and schools, who is ascribed and denied belonging, the harms caused when children do not experience belonging, and the extra work of performing (or attempting to perform) belonging.

Join Claudia Lux ’09 for a reading from her debut novel, Sign Here, a New York Times “What to Read” selection. Sign Here is a darkly humorous, surprisingly poignant, and utterly gripping novel about a guy who works in Hell (literally) and is on the cusp of a big promotion if only he can one more person to sell their soul. Lux's novel is currently being developed into an Amazon series. Claudia received her master’s in social work from the University of Texas at Austin. She lives and works in Boston, Massachusetts.

Alice Elliott Dark is the author of the novels Fellowship Point and Think of England, and two collections of short stories, In The Gloaming and Naked to the Waist. Her work has appeared in, among others, The New Yorker, Harper's, DoubleTake, Ploughshares, A Public Space, Best American Short Stories, Prize Stories: The O.Henry Awards, and has been translated into many languages. In the Gloaming, a story, was chosen by John Updike for inclusion in The Best American Short Stories of The Century and was made into films by HBO and Trinity Playhouse. Her non-fiction reviews and essays have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and many anthologies. She is a recipient of a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and an Associate Professor at Rutgers-Newark in the English department and the MFA program. Jo Ann Beard BFA, MA, University of Iowa. Essayist and creative nonfiction writer; author of two collections of essays, Festival Days and The Boys of My Youth, and the novel In Zanesville, as well as essays/articles published in magazines, journals, and anthologies. Join us for a conversation on navigating the genetic counseling field as a newly minted genetic counselor featuring Yakira Begun MS '22, Jamie Rand MS '20, and Sophia Rodriguez MS '20. Learn from these distinguished alumni as they reflect upon some of the common challenges of genetic counselors who are just starting out. They will discuss their experiences navigating job searches, compensation negotiation, transitioning from graduate school, adapting to a new work culture, and managing mental health challenges, such as imposter syndrome, depression, and anxiety, as well as support structures for managing them. The session will conclude with the speakers offering an opportunity for questions and answers.

Join the Women’s and Gender History Working Group for a screening of the Oscar-shortlisted documentary The Janes, a film about the women of the Jane Collective, an underground network for women seeking safe, affordable, illegal abortions in 1970s Chicago. The screening will be followed by a discussion with directors Emma Pildes ’02 and Tia Lessin moderated by Associate Dean Lyde Sizer, history faculty. 

This event will be held on Sarah Lawrence’s campus and is open to the entire community. The discussion following the screening at 8:00 PM ET will be available for in-person or virtual participation.
