Join us for a conversation on Advancing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice, and Belonging in the Genetic Counseling field featuring Dr. Reem Alsulaiman MS '16, Consulting GC in Medical Oncology and Interim Deputy Chair of the Medical Genetics Department at Hamad Medical Corporation; Flavia Facio MS '01, Clinical Program Manager in the Medical Affairs Department at Invitae Corporation; and Khalida Liaquat MS '06, Senior Manager of Genomics Services at Quest Diagnostic.
 
Learn from these passionate leaders about their experiences as members of the NSGC Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Stewardship Committee and serving diverse geographic, racial, and ethnic communities. They will share insight into how their roles and identities have impacted their work, and explore perspectives on the past, present, and future to make the field more inclusive for practitioners and patients moving forward.

This four-session participatory workshop is for teachers of all grades, when we, and those we work with, are given the opportunity to explore the many qualities and marvels of the natural world, through our capacity to imagine, to play, and to express, the very wonderment of our shared lives, within all that is alive. Based on the educational programs of The Touchstone Center for Children, the workshop will be led by the Center’s Founder and Director, Richard Lewis. in collaboration with Jeanie Yeo, Teaching Associate, The Touchstone Center, and Manager of Professional Development of the Wildlife Conservation Society. The series will be limited to 25 participants. The structure of the overall series will consist of four one-hour Zoom meetings, scheduled from 9:30 to 10:30 AM, on Saturday mornings from January through April, focused on each participant’s personal interests and specific teaching activities. The dates for the workshop are January 21, February 18, March 18, and April 22. We ask that participants commit to all four sessions in the series. This series is being underwritten by The Touchstone Center for Children. Sarah Lawrence is an Approved CTLE Sponsor and offers 4 CTLE hours for this program.

Kwame Johnson ’74 MFA ’77 directs this production, featuring the works of Paul Lawrence Dunbar, Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, Ntozake Shange, George C. Wolfe, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Sam Cooke, along with work from the musical Dreamgirls.

Sofia Samatar is the author of five books, most recently the memoir The White Mosque, which tells the story of her trip to Uzbekistan to research a group of Mennonites who followed a charismatic preacher to Central Asia in the nineteenth century. Her works include the award-winning epic fantasy A Stranger in Olondria and Monster Portraits, an exploration of monsters in collaboration with her brother, the artist Del Samatar. The recipient of the World Fantasy Award, the British Fantasy Award, and the Astounding Award for Best New Writer, Sofia lives in Virginia and teaches at James Madison University.

As part of its Faculty Spotlight series—which celebrates the publication and creation of significant new faculty work in any medium—the SLC Library is excited to recognize Writing faculty member Victoria Redel and the recent publication of her book of poetry, Paradise.

The Writing Institute Community Reading series returns on Zoom with their first event of the year. Writing Institute students and alumni are welcome to sign up to read for 3 to 4 minutes (or 650 words). All are welcome at this virtual open mic, with Tyler Mills as the featured reader. As writers, we want to create vivid images in the reader's mind, but what constitutes a "vivid image?" What makes a scene memorable? When is description important, and how much description is too much? In this craft talk, we will explore methods for conveying landscape, setting and detail in a compelling way.

Dan Chaon’s most recent book is Sleepwalk (2022.) He is the author of six previous books, including Ill Will, a national bestseller, named one of the ten best books of 2017 by Publishers Weekly. Other works include the short story collection Stay Awake (2012), a finalist for the Story Prize; the national bestseller Await Your Reply; and Among the Missing, a finalist for the National Book Award. Chaon’s fiction has appeared in the Best American Short Stories, the Pushcart Prize Anthologies, and the O. Henry Collection. He has been a finalist for the National Magazine Award in Fiction and the Shirley Jackson Award, and he was the recipient of an Academy Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Chaon lives in Cleveland.

Nobody writes in a vacuum. Everybody has a body and everybody has a context. And once in the world, a body of writing travels and collides with other writing and bodies, too. In this talk, Elvia Wilk will discuss examples of “ecosystems” literature that explicitly portray the complex (often unfathomable) relationships between individuals and the planet. Wilk will describe how she approaches writing nonfiction that doesn’t foreground herself but does situate her subject position, and introduce the concept of “fan-nonfiction” as a tentative term for this approach. Lastly, Wilk will speak about the afterlives of texts as they enter and alter existing ecosystems.

Elvia Wilk is a writer living in New York. She is the author of the novel Oval (2019) and the essay collection Death by Landscape (2022). She contributes to publications like The New York Review of Books, The Nation, The Atlantic, Granta, n+1, Bookforum, Artforum, Frieze, and 4Columns, and is a contributing editor at e-flux journal. She has taught at institutions like Eugene Lang College, City College of New York, the University of the Arts Berlin, and the Royal Academy Copenhagen.
