What is a Gryphon Guide?
Gryphon Guides (GGs) are academic peer mentors for new first year and transfer students. They work within the First Year Experience as Orientation Leaders during New Student Orientation, and transition to their role as academic peer mentors during the academic year. Gryphon Guides are assigned based on your First Year Studies class, and offer support through drop-in co-studying hours, individual outreach, and FYE programming. They provide resource referral, link students to academic support systems, and answer questions related to coursework, co-curricular, and extracurricular opportunities on campus. GGs email their cohorts regularly with campus updates and opportunities to connect. Students are encouraged to stop by their co-studying hours in the Learning Commons to get to know GGs, ask questions, and connect with academic resources!
Incoming students will be assigned to one of ten cohortst, each led by one Gryphon Guide, who they will work closely with and throughout the year. Gryphon Guides host weekly co-studying hours in the Learning Commons, and can refer and connect students to resources across campus; if a student does not know which resource to go to, their Gryphon Guide is a great place to start!
How do Gryphon Guides connect with students?
Gryphon Guides are assigned First Year Studies cohorts, who they work with throughout their first year at SLC. During the summer, Gryphon Guides host online “Ask Me Anything” sessions, where students are encouraged to ask any and all questions about life at Sarah Lawrence. Over orientation, they lead programming and engage students, helping them adjust to the college experience. Gryphon Guides remain in contact with their cohort over the school year, answering questions and hosting events geared toward getting students involved. The main goal of Gryphon Guides is to foster a sense of belonging at Sarah Lawrence.
Through this role in its entirety, Gryphon Guides will be an informative peer and resource for students regarding orientation, the transition to college, involvement on campus, and more.
Orientation Leaders
Orientation Leaders are a vital resource for new students in their transition to SLC. They assist with New Student Orientation prior to the Fall semester, leading their cohorts of new first year and transfer students through small group discussions, post-process sessions, and larger campus-wide events. Orientation Leaders are diverse student leaders who play a variety of roles across campus. They are knowledgeable in various facets of student life, and are excited to share their enthusiasm for SLC with new students.
