Sarah Lawrence College Counseling & Psychological Services practitioners are trained to work with a diverse range of issues and can help students identify their treatment goals. Our staff are generalists and well equipped at treating the diverse needs of undergraduate and graduate students. We routinely treat students for depression, anxiety, relationship issues, and other psychological concerns.
All services begin with an initial 30-minute tele-health consultation where students have the opportunity to talk about the concerns they wish to address. Based on the information presented, the therapist and the student will decide upon a treatment plan. Treatment plans may include on-campus care, off-campus referrals, or a combination of the two. Learn About Our Services
On-campus care begins with a tele-health consultation. During this consultation you and your provider will determine your next steps, which may include any of the following options.
Group Therapy
Group therapy is a powerful treatment approach with young adults that allows individuals to connect deeply with themselves and with others with a staff therapist facilitating. Group therapy can decrease isolation and create a sense of connection and belonging. Students are able to engage in our group therapy in an ongoing way throughout the academic year. We offer a diverse range of groups throughout the year that are focused on personal growth, skill development, and peer support and vary each semester depending on student needs.
Short Term Psychotherapy
Our staff therapists are trained to work with a diverse range of issues and can work with you to identify your short term therapy goals. We are generalists and well equipped at navigating the diverse needs of undergraduate and graduate students. We are a hybrid model of in-person and teletherapy with Mantra health and see students every other week for short term therapy of 6 sessions.
We may recommend consideration of more ongoing long-term therapy to help you navigate your concerns. Our clinical case manager can work with students to provide referrals. Additionally Thriving Campus is a resource as well https://sarahlawrence.thrivingcampus.com/
Let’s Talk
Talking can help. Let’s Talk is a 15-20 minute supportive drop in, one-on-one consultation with a Counseling and Psychological Services therapist. We offer drop in hours from 1-2:30 pm at the BWCC every Tuesday.
In-the-Moment Support
Whether it's 2 pm or 2 am, you can speak with a TELUS counselor by phone 24/7/365. If you are in distress, this service can provide practical, solution focused in-the-moment support to SLC students anytime (even over breaks), anywhere (even if you are off campus or studying abroad). TELUS student health app can be downloaded from App store.
Psychiatric Services
We offer multiple pathways to connecting with psychiatric medication management support depending on your needs and concerns. We believe in helping students establish a care plan that can support them successfully throughout their time at SLC. Our clinical case manager will work with students to refer them for medication management plan.
We partner with Mantra Health a telehealth company to offer brief medication management with telehealth psychiatric NPs for some mental health concerns. Please note due to the demand these services are limited and no stimulant medications are able to be prescribed through Mantra. We ask that students schedule consult with the case manager to discuss whether Mantra is the appropriate referral. Once working with a Mantra Health PNP they will work to stabilize a medication regimen and establish ongoing care in the community with referrals.
For students with more complex psychiatric medication regimens we refer to:
Rivia Mind is a resource for students seeking a reliable, insurance-based mental health provider. SLC Health & Wellness is unable to complete diagnostic evaluations for ADHD. However, we can refer students to community specialists for comprehensive evaluation and diagnosis off campus. For students with a complex ADHD and psychiatric medication regimen we refer to Rivia Mind see section above.
Students Previously Diagnosed with ADHD:
If you have previously been diagnosed with ADHD and are stable on medication treating ADHD prescribed by your provider, you should continue obtaining the prescription(s) from your provider. New York State has no exclusions on prescriptions for controlled substances from outside of the state, therefore your provider can send your prescription to a local pharmacy for pick up or delivery.
If you're experiencing issues with accessing continued medication from your provider:
If you have tried to obtain the prescription(s) from your provider and have experienced issues, you can seek approval to receive ADHD care at Health & Wellness. To do this, you must have your prescribing provider complete our Documentation of Previous ADHD Treatment Form and have them return it per instructions on the form. Please note the following are required to be considered for ADHD Medication Refills at SLC Health & Wellness.
- A fully completed Documentation of Previous ADHD Treatment Form - must be completed by a psychiatrist, a psychiatric nurse practitioner, or a doctorate level psychologist. Evaluation by primary care doctor including standardized evaluations and long term care history are acceptable in some cases. Online or telehealth evaluations are not sufficient.
- Treatment history - including medication history (at least 6 months) * SLC Health & Wellness will NOT initiate ADHD medication management for the first time*
- Treatment plan - what your current provider anticipates going forward, including dosage of current medication
After submission, the Health & Wellness clinical staff will review your records. Communication regarding student’s request will be sent via secure message through the Health & Wellness patient portal.
Peer Counseling
Peer Counselors are a group of students supported by the Counseling Center who are here to provide active listening and promote empathy, create spaces for meaningful connection, and create moments of social connection within the campus community.
Off-Campus Care
The SLC Counseling & Psychological Services Center has established relationships in Bronxville, Yonkers, Westchester County, and New York City that allow us to provide referrals to off-campus mental health specialists for ongoing and long term care.
Students who have enrolled in the SLC Student Health Insurance Plan are covered for treatment with any off campus licensed mental health clinician at 80% of reasonable and customary charges after a $250 annual deductible.
Students who are covered by plans other than the SLC Student Health Insurance Plan must contact their insurance plans directly to obtain coverage information.
If you are interested in receiving a referral for an off-campus provider or would like to discuss options for care, please contact Nancy Brennan, LMSW clinical case manager.
We partner with ThrivingCampus to help you connect with off-campus mental health care. View provider directory at: sarahlawrence.thrivingcampus.com
