The costs of studying away are going to be higher than staying on campus. The good news is that there are financial resources that you can apply to your studies. It all depends on the type of program you choose: SLC or non-SLC programs.
SLC Programs
Amsterdam, Havana, Florence, Leeds, London Theatre Program, Oxford, Paris, Japan programs
The tuition cost for attending an SLC program will be the same as studying in Bronxville. In other words, you pay SLC tuition to attend these programs.
Why do we this?
• To enable SLC students on financial aid to apply their financial to the cost of the program
What happens with your courses, grades and credits?
• All courses, grades and credits received on SLC programs are recorded on your SLC transcript as SLC courses and become part of your official transcript.
• Tuition
• Room and Board
• Health insurance
You will receive a bill each semester from Student Accounts (as you do while in Bronxville) listing the charges for your study away program.
Non-SLC Programs
An approved non- SLC program is run by an accredited four-year college/university or study away provider. The Office of Global Education staff will review approved programs with you when you schedule a meeting.If you attend a non-SLC program, you are not charged for tuition and fees, room and board or health insurance by SLC. You only pay a matriculation fee (currently $750) each semester. You will pay ALL program fees directly to the program you will be attending.
Will all my financial aid follow me to an approved non-SLC program?
No, only federal aid and loans can be applied to an approved non-SLC program. This aid is only accessible by completing a consortium agreement or contract. The Office of Financial Aid will release the consortium agreement or contract to the student via email. Gift aid or merit aid will not follow you on a non-SLC program.
What happens with my courses, grades and credits?
All successfully completed credits are recorded as transfer credit on your SLC transcript. The courses and grades will not be listed on the SLC transcript.
How do I know whether a program is approved?
Approved programs are usually: most international universities US study abroad providers affiliated with an accredited 4 year college or university
Types of Study Away Financial Aid
Federal Student Aid and Loans
You should be able to apply any federal aid and any loans you receive at Sarah Lawrence towards the cost of your education. However, financial aid eligibility varies between students, institutions, and study abroad programs. You must always consult the SLC Financial Aid Office to determine whether and how your federal aid and loans is applied towards the cost of your study abroad program.
Please note: Federal College Work- Study can only be earned/awarded on the Bronxville campus. These funds will not be available to you while you are abroad.
Merit Aid, Grants and Scholarships
This is funding that given to you by Sarah Lawrence or private sources to attend SLC in Bronxville. Any merit aid, grants or scholarships offered to you from Sarah Lawrence can only be applied to Sarah Lawrence programs. They cannot be applied to non- Sarah Lawrence programs. Grants and scholarships you receive from private sources will be applied towards the cost of a Sarah Lawrence program. You will need to check whether they can be applied to non SLC programs.
Always meet with the financial aid staff in advance of applying to study abroad programs to ensure you know which financial aid sources can be applied towards study abroad
Be Prepared
Start early! If you know you will need financial aid to study abroad, it’s crucial to start the process as soon as possible. Start by meeting with the Office of Global Education staff. You can make an appointment on Calendly. Be sure to stay ahead of deadlines!
- Contact the Financial Aid Office. Make an appointment to meet with someone in the financial aid office. If you start feeling overwhelmed or simply want to be sure you’ve considered all your options, they will help you!
- Make sure you’re in good academic standing. In order to study abroad you must be in good academic standing. It’s not a good idea to plan on studying abroad if you are struggling with your workload on campus. Also, students on probation cannot study away.
- Don’t forget the small expenses. The cost of studying away includes more than tuition and initial travel fees. Don’t forget to include expenses such as travel and activities, insurance, day-to-day necessities like medications or cleaning supplies, international taxes and fees, and the general cost of living in your host country, even on a temporary basis. Once you know your funding limitations, be sure to save extra funds to cover the rest of your expenses overseas.
