Why are stories important? Stories are in all of us; they are a way of connecting, and we all - especially children - need to connect right now. Stories can be read or told by others, and children can also tell, write, and draw their own stories. Children’s story telling and narration are also essential components of play and literacy development. Stories enable children to feel connected, seen, and valued in the world. The Child Development Institute introduced Gryphon Storytime and Story Making with Tanya and Emily to help support children and families in our community to share stories and feel this connection. Gryphon Storytime is an opportunity for the Sarah Lawrence College community to come together around shared stories, as students, staff, faculty, and community partners read favorite children’s books. Story Making with Tanya and Emily is a mini-series of videos showing young children (and adults) different ways of creating and telling their own stories.
