Historical note
In 1950, the Whitney Foundation commissioned Professor Norman Dello Joio, a member of the music faculty of Sarah Lawrence College, to compose a new opera, the “Triumph of Joan.” The production, especially created for performance by the students of Sarah Lawrence College, ran for six performances in May, 1950. Dello Joio collaborated with Joseph Machlis, professor of music at Queen’s College, on the text of the opera. A multi-level set, designed and constructed by students of the College allowed for performances in arena-style. The only space large enough to accommodate the production was Bates Assembly. The production combined the three areas of performing arts at the College – dance, theatre, and music.
Scope and Contents note
This collection consists of photographic prints, contact sheets, and negatives of various stages of the theatre production “Triumph of Joan” at Sarah Lawrence College in 1950. The photographs were taken by various photographers, who are noted on the reverse side of the photographs. Negatives are housed next to the image they represent.
