Historical Note
From July 14-31, 1979, leaders of major women’s organizations from across the nation met at the Sarah Lawrence College Summer Institute in Women’s History to learn about the history of women and to explore methods of bringing the knowledge they acquired back to their organizations and to the public at large. Out of that Institute came a resolution calling for the creation of National Women’s History Week to acknowledge and celebrate contributions made by women to the history of the United States.
Two Women’s History graduate students at Sarah Lawrence College, Pam Elam and Peggy Pascoe, developed a practicum to revolve around the creation and implementation of National Women’s History Week. Using the resolution passed by the participants at the Sarah Lawrence Summer Institute in Women’s History as a foundation, Elam and Pascoe lobbied for the introduction and passage of a Congressional resolution designating March 2-8, 1980 as National Women’s History Week and pressured President Carter to issue a proclamation of National Women’s History Week immediately. Additionally, Elam and Pascoe contacted state governors and city mayors to issue proclamations designating Women’s History Week.
Scope and Contents note
