Biographical Note
Harrison Tweed was acting president of Sarah Lawrence College for the academic year 1959-1960. Tweed began his association with the College in 1940 when he became a member of the Board of Trustees. He was a board member from November 1940 to November 1954 and was Chairman of the Board from 1946 to 1954. He was re-elected to the Board in November 1960 for the term ending June 30, 1965. He served as honorary trustee until his death in 1969.
While President of SLC, Tweed was a partner in the New York law firm of Milbank, Tweed, Hope and Hadley, a trustee of The Cooper Union, president of the American Law Institute, and chairman of the Joint Committee on Continuing Legal Education of the Institute and the American Bar Association. Prior to his Presidency, he was an overseer of Harvard College from which he graduated in 1907, a former president of the Harvard Alumni Association, and the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. He belonged to the Harvard, Century, Down Town (New York), and Porcellian (Cambridge) clubs.
Born on October 18, 1885, Tweed attended St. Mark’s Preparatory. He received his A.B. from Harvard in 1907 and went on to graduate from Harvard Law School, cum laude, in 1910. He enlisted as a private in the U.S. Army in August 1918, detailed to O.T.C., and was discharged December 1918.
He married Eleanor Roelker on June 24, 1914. They divorced in 1928. They had two daughters – Eleanor (Mrs. Tweed Aldrich) and Katharine Winthrop (Mrs. Archibald B. Roosevelt Jr.). On May 23, 1928, Tweed married Blanche Oelrichs Barrymore (known as Michael Strange). They divorced in 1942. Tweed then married Barbara Banning on November 21, 1942. They had one daughter – Sandra Barbette. Katharine graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in 1946 and Barbette was a student at the College from 1961 to 1963.
