Historical note

Field work at Sarah Lawrence College started in the 1930s with such projects as the housing surveys of the surrounding neighborhoods of Tuckahoe, Mount Vernon, and Yonkers. First described in the 1930-1931 catalog, field work offered students a way to interact with their surrounding communities. The catalog description read: “The nearness to New York makes it possible to use the city as an educational laboratory. Unusual community facilities are available also in Westchester County. In addition to sustained work in various libraries, museums, and other organizations, field trips are planned by which the students, with instructors, take advantage of the numberless opportunities which the vicinity affords for the enrichment of the education program.” Some of the first field trips were to the Alexander Smith Carpet Factory and the Otis Elevator Company in Yonkers as part of Jean Carroll Trepp’s economics class, so that students could see how a real business functioned. Field work soon became a standard part of most social science courses. During the depression, the Yonkers and Tuckahoe Housing Authorities asked Sarah Lawrence students to assist in four or five week housing surveys of the two communities to provide the authorities with information that meant to improve housing conditions. In addition to field work such as the surveys, students participated in field trips to Puerto Rico, Canada, the Tennessee Valley Authority, and Costa Rica in order to experience different cultures. Details of each of these activities can be found in the papers written by students as well as the Director of Field Work’s reports contained in the records.

Scope and Contents note

The records consist of correspondence, reports, and subject files on the various aspects of field work, mostly from the late 1930s through the 1950s. Most of the correspondence is with Edward Solomon, Director of Field Work. Although the files go through 1998, the bulk of the material is from the 1930s to the 1950s with an emphasis on the housing surveys of Tuckahoe, Mount Vernon, and Yonkers and the papers written by students and staff on the various field work projects. Also included are Field Work Committee meeting minutes and Director of Field Work Reports. Arranged alphabetically by folder title.
