Historical note
In May 1968, during a time of intense social change and upheaval at Sarah Lawrence College and around the country, the newly formed Black Students Association, brought a proposal, “Proposal Concerning Incorporation of the Black Experience in the Curriculum” to the Dean of the College, Jacquelyn Mattfeld and President Esther Raushenbush. As a result, new coursework in Social Change and Black Studies was instituted in 1968-69 along with a lecture series, “Black Steps Toward Social Change.” The Black Students Association also requested that the College hire a Black Studies Coordinator to counsel black students. The first coordinator was Samuel Anderson, hired in 1969. In the 1969-70 academic year, with the help of Samuel Anderson and students, the Black Social Change Institute came into being. Each year thereafter, the Black Studies curriculum grew at Sarah Lawrence. After Samuel Anderson, Sidney Black, Jr. was appointed Black Studies Coordinator in 1972, but he resigned in 1973, leaving the position unfilled.
