Historical note

The first reference to an Asian and Pacific Islander group on campus is a 1988 entry in the weekly calendar advertising an Asian Student Union meeting. Among other programming, the ASU organized events for the Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month every November. At some point between 1996 and 1997 the group changed from the Asian Student Union to the Asian Pacific Islander Coalition for Action and Diversity (APICAD). Under this new name, the group continues to sponsor programming and events pertaining to the Asian and Pacific Islander community.

Scope and Contents note

The APICAD collection consists mainly of advertisements and fliers of school functions and relevant activities within the Asian Pacific Islander community. Also included are meeting minutes and notes, email correspondence, budget requests, copies of the APICAD publication, The Ninja, and outside publications by other student groups such as Bypass and Unbound. Clippings from the Sarah Lawrence College newspaper, The Phoenix, are also included here along with boycott and protest campaign information pertaining to Coca-Cola and Free David Wong. Additionally, several folders regarding the annual East Coast Asian Student Union (ECASU) Conference exists including some budgetary information, itineraries, and conference programs from 2001-2005. The collection is particularly strong in documenting its evolution on campus from a fledgling to influential student group. From 2000 to 2003, records and events are sporadic while the 2004-2005 school year shows an organized group with correspondence and notes not only from group meetings but also from co-chairs Loreena Lee '07 and Rachelle Cruz '07. Lastly, videos pertaining to the Free David Wong campaign and Manhattan Taiko are included as well as Loreena Lee’s APICAD files, Danny Katz music sampler, and APICAD photos all on CD-R. Photographs have been removed from the collection and housed with the general photograph collection.
