Biographical Note

Alice Finch Smith, born May 15, 1910, graduated from Sarah Lawrence College with honors on June 17, 1930. While at the College she studied world literature, voice, art, modern drama, philosphy of art, and advanced drawing and painting. During the 1930-1931, 1935-1936 and 1936-1937 academic years she was hired as an Art Assistant in the Art Department.

Prior to Sarah Lawrence College, Alice attended Loulie Compton Seminary and Montemare School. She also travelled through Europe with a European travel school. After graduation Alice went on to become the Art Education Coordinator at the Birmingham Museum of Art, the executive coordinator of the Museum Art Education Council, and to teach in the Birmingham Public Schools. Alice Finch Smith died May 28, 1996. She was 96 years old.

Scope and Contents note

This scrapbook contains material dating to the years when Alice Finch was in attendance at Sarah Lawrence College. She collected musical programs of performances by the Sarah Lawrence College Choir and Glee Club, recitals, “The Campus Players” theater programs and scripts. The scrapbook also includes letters, telegrams, and notes from friends and administrators at the College, such as Constance Warren, as well as dance cards, invitations, and newspaper clippings. Early photographs of the College and of trips Alice Finch took between 1928 and 1930, some with friends and family to Bermuda, are also found in the scrapbook. In addition there is a 1929-1930 college handbook and other documents relating to the Sarah Lawrence community, such as weekly calendars and announcements.
