Sasha Silverstein '75

I am an artist living in Brooklyn, creating many kinds of work...paintings, sculpture, constructions, etc. My materials are varied as well. I've shown in New York, Mexico, Canada and Germany. The two pieces I am exhibiting are paintings I created in Mexico in February. They are based on still photos that I took at the recent Matisse exhibit in Philadelphia of the Ballet Russe film. Matisse created the costumes and sets.

This is rather expressionistic, textured and loose in style. The palette is limited. My desire was to express the movement of the dance.

This is the second pass at this image, also very limited palette, using purple, which I rarely use, although I love it. I wanted this one to be strong and present. Less about movement, this is more about the tensions between figures.
