Tell us about your international journey. Where is home for you?
I was born and raised in Beijing, China. I first came to the United States when I started my undergraduate studies here. My hometown and cultural identity have always been key factors in navigating my educational journey.
What made you choose SLC?
I always knew I wanted to make theater and performance my academic focus in college, and while I was looking for a school with a strong performing arts focus, I also urged for a liberal arts environment that would allow me to thrive in a multidisciplinary way. Among all the choices that my counselor offered, I realized SLC's open curriculum, conference system, and location would hugely benefit me in building my personal project.
What are your concentrations?
Theater and German Studies
How would you describe your SLC experience so far?
It's a fun and challenging one. The more open-minded you are, the more you get. The academic experience here is great, it makes me feel fearless when entering different knowledge areas. I enjoyed my time spent both inside and outside the theater department: learning new instruments with the world music ensemble, volunteering at CURB, teaching in the Lunchbox program are always the highlights of my college experience.
What are some of your favorite things to do at SLC? Where are some of your favorite places to go off campus? Do you have a favorite meal?
Bronxville is a nice little town that has a lot of good places to chill. It's also quite easy to get on the train from Fleetwood or Bronxville to Manhattan. I went to the city really often to see shows during school. Many independent/off-off theater places offer good student discounts like Lamama, 59e59, BAM. Definitely worth a visit if you are trying to find something new to do.
What advice do you have for international students applying to SLC?
The experience of living abroad is varied for people. Culture shock could be also a very subtle and lasting feeling that weaves its way in our everyday lives. But take the challenge and use it as an opportunity to know yourself better, it's always important to remember who you are.
