Building on our values as an inclusive, intellectually curious, and diverse community, SLC Reads allows all incoming students the opportunity to have common ground with a community read that will explore themes that are paramount to the SLC College community.
For the 2020-21 year's read, the Committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the Provost’s Office have chosen Behold the Dreamers (2017) by Imbolo Mbue. Behold the Dreamers is the story of a young Cameroonian couple making a new life in New York just as the Great Recession upends the economy. The novel explores themes of immigration, class, race, ambition, family, and love. Behold the Dreamers was the winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award, an ALA Notable Book, and a New York Times best-seller; it was also selected for Oprah's Book Club and longlisted for the PEN/Open Book Award.
